West Nile Virus found in North Texas


Several media outlets are reporting that West Nile Virus was found in North Texas and has caused at least one death.



According to the CDC, West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. It is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Cases of West Nile occur during mosquito season, which starts in the spring and continues through fall depending on where you live.


According to the CDC, of the 103 reported cases one was in two were in our area.


The best way to prevent West Nile is to protect yourself form mosquito bites.

  • Use insect repellent

    When outdoors, use an EPA-registered insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol. If you're also using sunscreen, apply the repellent after.

  • Wear protective clothing

    From dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and a hat. You can also treat clothing and gear with permethrin to repel or kill mosquitoes.

  • Stay indoors

    If possible, stay indoors at dawn and dusk. Or call us to treat your yard, so you can stay out doors.

  • Reduce mosquito habitats

    Remove places where mosquitoes lay eggs, such as small amounts of water or bottle caps. You can also install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
