If you’ve noticed mosquitoes lingering longer into the fall in Washington, D.C., you’re not imagining things. According to a 2024 analysis by The Washington Post, D.C. now experiences 13 more “mosquito days” per year compared to the 1980–2009 average. These are days when temperature and humidity conditions are ideal for mosquito activity .

This increase is largely driven by climate change. Rising temperatures and humidity levels have extended the mosquito season, allowing these pests to thrive for longer periods. This not only affects our comfort but also raises public health concerns, as mosquitoes are vectors for diseases like West Nile virus and dengue fever .

For residents in the D.C. area, this means taking proactive steps to protect themselves and their families. Regularly eliminating standing water, using insect repellents, and ensuring window screens are intact can help reduce mosquito exposure.

As our climate continues to change, staying informed and prepared is our best defense against the growing mosquito menace.
